A desk is rarely something we think about once we begin working. Ideally, it becomes part of the rhythm of the day, quietly supporting the body while attention stays on the task at hand. When designer Francesco Feliziani began designing the Tolle Desk for Totem Road, his thinking centred on one idea: how the body should feel after hours of use.
A desk should support the body without asking for attention. Rather than creating a desk that stands out, the goal was to design one that quietly disappears into the rhythm of the day. The result is a desk shaped by quiet ergonomics, thoughtful design decisions that support the body naturally, often without the user consciously noticing.
“My aim was for the body to feel as little as possible, so the desk almost disappears in use.”

In conversation with Francesco, we asked:
-
When you began designing the Tolle Desk, what did you want the body to feel
while using them?
When I began designing the Tolle Desk, I was thinking carefully about how the body would feel over long periods of use. The way we interact with a product is central to my practice, and this is especially important for a home desk, which often becomes part of our daily routine for many hours at a time. I drew directly from my own experience of working at a desk each day. My aim was for the body to feel as little as possible, so that the object almost disappears in use and allows focus to remain on the work itself.
This is reflected in small, considered details throughout the design. The softly eased front edge of the desktop is one example. It is subtle enough to be barely noticed visually, yet generous enough to create a smooth, comfortable point of contact for the forearms.
2. What does “comfort” mean to you beyond softness or padding?
Comfort goes beyond softness or padding. It is connected to the purpose of an object and the way it is meant to be used. We naturally expect very different experiences from a comfortable lounge chair than from a comfortable office chair, for example. From a designer’s perspective, comfort comes from a deep understanding of how a product will be used over time. When this understanding is clear, comfort is achieved through proportion, support, and balance, rather than through excess.
3. How did proportion, height and shape influence the way the Tolle desk interacts
with the person using them?
The proportions of the Tolle Desk are the result of careful ergonomic study within the context of standard home furniture. The intention was to create a desk that works comfortably alongside the objects that naturally belong in a home office. Height, depth, and overall shape were considered together so that the desk supports the body in a quiet and intuitive way. When proportion feels right, the interaction becomes effortless, and the desk settles naturally into daily use.

4. What role does subtlety play in good design, especially when a piece is used for
many hours each day?
Subtlety plays an important role in good design, especially for objects that are used for many hours each day. A well designed piece should not ask for attention or try to impress. It should simply do what it is meant to do, and do it well. Features that are overly expressive can become tiring over time, particularly in objects that are used so intensively. In this sense, restraint becomes a form of care for the user. A desk is the stage on which work takes place. Its role is to support the process quietly, without drawing focus away from what truly matters.
5. How do you think good furniture should support the way we naturally sit, move and
shift throughout the day?
We choose furniture to shape spaces that feel personal and familiar, spaces that reflect our taste, our values, and the way we live. Furniture should support the body in a natural way, allowing us to sit, move, and shift throughout the day without effort. Good furniture needs to do its job well, from an ergonomic standpoint through to how it is designed, engineered, and manufactured. At the same time, it should sit comfortably within an aesthetic language that feels right to the user, so that function and appearance work together to create a sense of ease.
"Like the chairs designed alongside it, the Tolle Desk incorporates refined adjustments that support the body while maintaining a clean and minimal geometry. Details designed to work quietly in the background."

For Francesco, the success of the design is not something users immediately notice.
Instead, it reveals itself slowly through everyday use.
“I hope people are able to use the desk without having to think about it,” he reflects. “When the details are right, the object simply becomes part of the day.”
A well designed workspace should leave you feeling supported, balanced, comfortable, and ready to return tomorrow.
