A modern coastal family home inspired by the natural beauty and tranquility of its location on Sydney's Northern Beaches, we speak to the 'Four Bayes' architect
–
buck&simple – to find out more about their practice and the architecture & interior design of this recently-completed project.
Founded in 2013 by Peter Ahern and Kurt Crisp, their vision for buck&simple began with a vision of creating a firm dedicated to craftsmanship, attention to detail, and enhancing quality of life. They started with a commitment of delivering uniquely tailored, environmentally sustainable solutions that stand the test of time.
Ethical design and sustainable building practices continue to be fundamental to their mission where they prioritise minimising environmental impact, utilising eco-friendly materials, and ensuring energy-efficient solutions in all their projects. We particularly commend buck&simple's partnership with Carbon Neutral through their Plant-a-Tree program, where they pledge to plant a tree for every new project they undertake.
When it came to this Four Bayes project, it's no surprise the buck&simple team drew inspiration from the natural beauty and tranquillity of coastal living.
Working on both the architecture and interior design of this home, their end goal was to celebrate the modern coastal aesthetics while maintaining a timeless and flowing open space with a style that features a tonal consistency and a textured palette to harmoniously integrate with the project's natural setting.
With the client's young, dynamic family top of mind, buck&simple set out to balance their practical living requirements with a free-flowing open layout with an elevated, sophisticated look that complements the beachside setting.
"Our favourite space in the finished home has to be the combined living and dining area, seamlessly integrated with the kitchen. The centrepiece is undoubtedly the elegant fireplace, which adds warmth and a sense of coziness. This space is designed to be both functional and inviting, serving as the heart of the home where family and friends can gather."
Another centrepiece in this home would have to be the Totem Road Nova Rectangle Dining Table, as specified by the buck&simple team. When selecting the materials and furniture, they opted for a natural oak and travertine pairing to act as the hero.
"We chose travertine crazy pave flooring for its natural warmth and timeless appeal, complemented by travertine fluted tiles and natural toned oak."
Buck&simple selected the Nova for "its sleek lines and elegant finish, that perfectly complements the modern yet timeless aesthetic we aimed to achieve in this project".
"Its clean design and sturdy build made it a perfect fit for creating a refined and functional dining space."
We were flattered when they mentioned that they were drawn to Totem Road "for its commitment to quality and design excellence".
