Liz explains how she and her business partner, Mima, first crossed paths at a London architectural firm back in 2016, where they shared a “lightbulb moment.”
“We realised we’d both always naturally gravitated toward wellness and conscious design, but we wanted to take that connection further and make it more deliberate. That’s how Studio Mae came to life,” Liz says.
Now working together across two continents—Mima leads their UK projects while Liz focuses on the Australian ones—they’ve continued this approach.
“What drives us is the idea of creating interiors that go beyond aesthetics. We use natural materials, sustainable principles, and thoughtful design strategies to craft spaces that nurture well-being, encourage connection, and stand the test of time,” Liz explains.
“It’s about designing for how you want to feel in your home, not just how it looks—and we’re so passionate about getting that balance just right.”
What are your top tips for designing a space that supports both human well-being and the health of the planet, while upholding a beautiful space still?
First and foremost, always choose natural, sustainable materials—they don’t just look beautiful; they actively contribute to a healthier home by improving air quality. From flooring to joinery to upholstery, natural materials exude a quiet luxury that enhances well-being while being kinder to the planet. Secondly, think about longevity.
Invest in quality, timeless pieces that only get better with age. For me, it’s all about creating warm, layered, and personal spaces that support the people who live in them while taking care of the planet at the same time.
What are three ways you actively care for the planet in your own home?
In my own home, I try to live by the same principles we champion in our projects. I’m really intentional about what comes into the space, always prioritising quality over quantity and choosing sustainably made, durable pieces. I stick to non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning products and paints because creating a safe, healthy environment for my family is a top priority. And whenever possible, I incorporate natural materials—like linen drapery, a naturally made mattress, and natural upholstery or floor finishes. These choices don’t just look beautiful; they also contribute to the planet’s and our family’s well-being.
What drew you to Totem Road for your projects?
Totem Road’s philosophy resonates so much with our own at Studio Mae. Their furniture is not only beautifully designed and crafted but also created with sustainability at its core. I love how their pieces feel timeless and versatile—never flashy, always considered.
For me, working with brands like Totem Road is about aligning values; they’re as committed to sustainability and well-being as we are, and that’s what makes the collaboration feel so seamless.
Who is your biggest role model and why?
It’s hard to pinpoint just one person! We are constantly inspired by artisans and makers who honour traditional craftsmanship while pushing for innovation in sustainability. These are the people who remind us that true luxury is about care, thought, and intention—it’s about creating something that lasts and holds meaning, not just following trends.
